Cube pepper is also known as Java pepper or tail pepper.

Cubeb pepper is now also cultivated in other regions of Sri Lanka, but its native place is the Indonesian island of Java. At the time of harvest, the berries are close to ripeness. Its sharp, bitter taste is paired with a mint and eucalyptus note (similar to turpentine).

Java pepper is particularly popular in Ayurvedic cuisine. It is perfect with Indian dishes, meat and vegetable dishes, chutneys and cheeses. Although cubeb pepper was hardly known in the 19th century, it has been making a comeback in kitchens around the world in recent years. Cubeb pepper is an important ingredient in the Moroccan spice blend Ras el Hanout.
