The Tasmanian pepper is an exotic pepper variety and, like the Sichuan pepper or the pink pepper, is not a real pepper. The Tasmanian pepper is so unique that it can only be obtained wild in the mountains of Tasmania worldwide and is not related to the classic pepper (piper nigrum).

The flavors of Tasmanian pepper are fruity, complex and multi-layered with notes of clove and basil. Its spiciness is many times greater than that of ordinary black pepper. When you eat the pepper, you also get a slight tingling feeling on your tongue, similar to green Szechuan pepper.

The possible uses of Tasmanian pepper are almost unlimited. It is particularly recommended for game specialties. It harmonizes wonderfully with juniper, be it for sauces or compotes. It can be used whole, crushed in a mortar or in a pepper mill. If the berries are moistened or boiled, a wonderful purple color develops on the food. However, it should be noted that the aroma will dissipate if cooked for a longer period of time. It is therefore recommended not to waste this valuable pepper and to add some towards the end of cooking.
